CRN
Here is a look at the history and evolution of CRN (formerly Computer Reseller News), the leading publication for the IT channel ecosystem:
1. Early Days and Origins (1980s)
- 1982: The publication was launched on June 7, 1982, by CMP Media. Originally debuting as Computer Retail Week, it was created to cover the booming business side of the early PC revolution. It was soon renamed Computer Reseller News.
- 1987: The publication solidified its focus on the B2B technology supply chain, reporting on the businesses that purchased hardware from manufacturers and distributors to resell to end-user organizations.
2. Digital Shift and Rebranding (1990s - 2000s)
- 1994: Embracing the internet age, Computer Reseller News launched its first website to deliver daily news to technology vendors and channel partners.
- 2000: The publication transitioned from a tabloid newspaper format into a traditional magazine. Recognizing that the IT channel had evolved far beyond basic "reselling" to include complex systems integration, consulting, and independent software development, the publication officially shortened its name to the acronym CRN.
3. Ownership Changes (2000s - 2010s)
- Late 2000s: Original publisher CMP Media was purchased by London-based United Business Media (UBM) in a massive $920 million acquisition, bringing CRN under the UBM Channel umbrella.
- 2013: The U.S. edition of CRN was acquired by The Channel Company as part of a management buyout from UBM. The Channel Company has served as the brand's primary steward ever since.
4. Global Reunification and Expansion (2020s)
- 2022: CRN celebrated its 40th anniversary as the definitive voice of the IT channel. In April of the same year, The Channel Company acquired CRN UK from Incisive Media, reuniting the U.S. and U.K. editions under a single corporate roof.
- 2023 - 2026: The Channel Company heavily invested in bringing its global affiliate brands in-house. They relaunched CRN Germany in 2023, took direct management of CRN Australia in March 2025 (ending a previous licensing agreement), and most recently launched CRN India in February 2026 to operate under a newly formed CRN Asia umbrella.
